Introduction:
We recently partnered with a leading online retailer specializing in eco-friendly outdoor power equipment (e.g., lawn mowers, chainsaws). They were facing challenges managing their e-commerce website due to reliance on multiple agencies and third-party apps, leading to slow development cycles and website performance issues.
The work for this client shown on this site will be limited, since it was done by Emmanuel under a NDA. We will cover an overview of this project to provide proof of our works and successes without including any proprietary information about our client.
Client Challenges:
- Limited In-House Development: Our client lacked a dedicated development team, relying on external agencies and apps for website updates. This resulted in slow response times to website issues and feature requests.
- Disjointed Data Management: The client used various tools from different agencies, making it difficult to get a holistic view of user behavior and website performance.
- Website Performance Issues: Slow loading times and a non-mobile-optimized website were negatively impacting user experience and conversion rates.
Our Solution:
Our data-driven approach focused on streamlining the development process, optimizing website performance, and creating a user-friendly experience across all devices. Here’s a breakdown of our key strategies:
- Centralized Development: We brought all website development and maintenance in-house, allowing for faster reaction times to data insights and website adjustments.
- Data Consolidation and Analysis: We implemented a unified data tracking system using heatmaps, Google Analytics, social media pixels, and custom tracking solutions. This provided a comprehensive view of user behavior and website performance.
- Mobile-First Optimization: We prioritized optimizing the website for mobile devices, recognizing the growing number of mobile shoppers. Additionally, we launched a dedicated mobile app for a seamless user experience.
- A/B Testing and User Data Integration: We utilized A/B testing to compare different design elements and website features, constantly refining the user experience based on data insights.
Results:
By implementing a data-driven design approach and centralizing website development, we achieved significant improvements for our client:
- 20% Increase in E-commerce Sales: The redesigned website and mobile app led to a 20% year-over-year increase in online sales.
- Improved Website Performance: Load times were significantly reduced, leading to a more positive user experience and improved search engine ranking. When we started looking into user’s behavior with heatmaps and custom analytics built by us we can see where rage clicks and users exiting the site.
- Enhanced User Engagement: Heatmap data and user tracking revealed areas for improvement, allowing us to optimize product pages, checkout processes, and overall website navigation, leading to increased user engagement.
Clients’ Testimony 1 (IT E-Commerce Manager):
“I’ve worked with Emmanuel very closely for a year, and with his help we have been able to transform our website and deliver on a long list of new requirements and features to help drive our e-commerce business. During this time, he supported mainly our Shopify Plus e-commerce store, customizing our theme to address bugs and continuously help improve the customer journey, with projects such as streamlining our checkout process, optimizing website performance, helping our organization drive customer conversion.
Along the way, he was always eager to provide input and his expertise to find the most effective and user-friendly solution to different business requirements, including integration work with 3rd party systems such as Salesforce (via API), Mulesoft to just name a couple, and without naming the various apps that he helped implement across 3 different Shopify stores for 3 different regions (Europe, Canada and US), with complexities of managing Shopify’s Markets features.
He demonstrated great team working skills, collaborating with the different IT and Business teams, as well as our other developers to brainstorm and find unorthodox solutions to less than simple requests. From when started to when he left, he continued to improve overall skills, continuously researching, and working with various experts to deliver on requirements on a timely manner. It’s always hard to decide what aspects of a person’s work ethic is best to call out, but some of Emmanuel’s greatest assets that our team appreciated the most was his resourcefulness and ability to work well as part of a team, while demonstrating dedication and commitment to driving the company’s best interests.”
Clients’ Testimony 2 (Senior Software Developer):
“Emmanuel is extremely innovative and highly skilled.
Not only does he bring a positive “can-do” attitude towards projects and tasks, he is able to work very well with limited parameters and scopes of work. Working with him is easy and his ability as a cross disciplined programming polyglot is impressive. Whether it be Node, PHP, Liquid or JS he has us covered. Give him a task or a project, and he will work on it and get it right.
He’s also just an all around good dude.”
Conclusion:
This case study demonstrates the power of a data-driven design approach in e-commerce website development. By centralizing development, consolidating data insights, and prioritizing mobile optimization, we were able to significantly improve website performance, user experience, and ultimately drive sales growth for our client.
